I have not talked to the players about their behavior as of yet, because I honestly do not know if I am going to keep them on the team
I knew it would be tricky to keep all of our players under control when the high university varsity team went to the big hoops tourney last week. I took numerous additional coaches and numerous parents to try and keep things under control, and still half of our team ended up getting smashed on Sunday night. I knocked on their doors for fifteen minutes before anyone answered. I was going to get the hotel maid to open the room. The teenagers looked terrible. They had sizable bags under their eyes and they were weak. They stinked of alcohol and beer. I didn’t have time to chew out the kids, because the people I was with and I were running late. I gave them 2 minutes to get ready and be downstairs in the lobby of the hotel. When Jack and Bill arrived, they no longer seemed drunk, however they stinked savor marijuana. The kids were laughing and giggling, and my top scoring player was too high to play in the tournament. I found recreational marijuana in their hotel room. I benched both kids and made them sit and watch the game. We lost badly in the 1st round and the kids had to carry that shame all the way home. I informed both parents that the teens were involved in illegal activities, and neither parent seemed surprised and even made a remark that it was just weed. I have not talked to the players about their behavior as of yet, because I honestly do not know if I am going to keep them on the team. I can excuse a great deal of teenage behavior, however their selfishness ruined the whole team’s opening at a trophy.
